The new .name domain was created to give people a unique idenitification on the Internet, communication systems and a number of other new technologies. It is the first and only global top-level domain (gTLD) for individuals, approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in November 2000. The first .name domain resolved on the Internet on 15 January 2002.

The new .name address simply points to the old and allows you to keep what you have but with a new 'front door'. Now, send both addresses to the search engines of your choice and in most cases you will double your exposure. The new .name has a more professional appearance that will help you in your business activities.

   With its' recent opening, .name became structurally and technically identical to e.g. .com and .net.
